How one of France’s leading food producers upgraded to full labelling flexibility

Labelling made easy with one solution for a wide range of products

Operating in a fast-paced industry, one of France’s leading food producers relies on efficient, flexible production – especially when dealing with a broad range of product types and formats.

With limited factory floor space and increasing demand for quick product changeovers, the customer needed a labelling solution that could adapt just as fast as their production lines.

They found it in HM Systems’ compact labelling solution: a setup built around three high-performance labelling heads — two for top labels and one for bottom — designed to handle flexible production demands without compromising on quality or speed.

From standard to smart and flexible labelling

Although the system is based on HM Systems’ standard labeller, it’s the tailored software integration that truly makes the difference. Each production run is controlled via barcode scanning — which means every barcode triggers automatic adjustments across all three labellers, adjusting and optimising them for the current batch.

“It’s a software solution that’s particularly well-suited to flexible production environments, where multiple product variants need to run through the same line each day,”

explains Henrik Thomsen, Business Development Director at HM Systems.

This intelligent setup means no more manual adjustments for operators. Therefore, the solution saves time, reduces errors, and enables faster changeovers.

“The automatic mechanical adjustments through our software significantly reduce the need for operator training. You simply scan the barcode, and the labeller positions itself accordingly,”

says Henrik Thomsen.

“This improves product consistency and overall labelling quality, while giving a productivity boost by cutting down setup time and avoiding relabelling.”

Seamless integration with existing systems

A key benefit for the customer is the direct integration with their Weigh Price Labelling (WPL) machine. The WPL sends order data via RS232 communication only when prompted, allowing the HM labelling units to sync precisely with real-time production requirements.

This connection ensures every label matches the right product, right away.

Future-ready labelling with limited space

In an industry where floor space is often at a premium, the solution’s compact footprint was a major win. The ability to apply top, bottom, and flash labels within the same setup — without compromising throughput — has helped the customer achieve high production capacity even in tight conditions.

This wasn’t their first experience with HM Systems.
After installing their first solution in 2024, they quickly placed an order for a second — the unit featured in this case — and three additional upgrades to existing machines are now underway.
These upgrades will bring older labellers up to the same automated standard, boosting both efficiency and operator ease across the board.

“With this solution, the customer will not only enjoy precise labelling, they get access to production data, improved traceability, and a scalable platform for future needs,”

Henrik Thomsen adds.

“It’s a true all-rounder, able to handle a wide variety of product formats without sacrificing performance.”
