Interpack 2026: Sustainability still matters but flexibility and efficiency took center stage

Interpack 2026 once again confirmed why the exhibition remains one of the most important meeting places for the global packaging and labelling industry.

For HM Systems, the week in Düsseldorf was filled with valuable conversations, strong international interest and clear market signals about where the industry is heading next.

Throughout the exhibition, we experienced strong international interest and welcomed manufacturers, OEMs, distributors and end customers from across Europe and beyond to the HM Systems stand.

More importantly, Interpack 2026 provided valuable insight into how customer priorities continue to evolve, with increasing focus on sustainability, operational efficiency and flexible production solutions.

From sustainability ambitions to practical implementation

Sustainability is still high on the agenda throughout the industry, but compared to previous years, many conversations have become noticeably more operational and solution focused.

Companies are no longer only discussing sustainability targets. They are actively looking for technologies that can reduce waste, improve production efficiency and create more flexible production environments at the same time.

According to HM Systems CSO, Sten Krag-Hansen, this was one of the clearest trends throughout the exhibition:

“What stood out this year was how specific many conversations had become. Customers are looking for solutions that create measurable improvements in production while also supporting their sustainability goals. The expectations are simply higher today.”

Strong interest in Linerfree solutions

One of the strongest themes throughout the week was the growing demand for Linerfree labelling solutions.

Many visitors were searching for ways to reduce material consumption, simplify operations and lower total operating costs, especially within food production and packaging environments with high output and increasing pressure on efficiency.

Jan Kondrup, Key Accounts & Export at HM Systems, experienced particularly strong interest in Linerfree technologies during the exhibition:

“Linerfree is no longer viewed as an alternative technology. For many companies, it is becoming a realistic strategic direction. We had a lot of conversations with manufacturers looking for ways to combine sustainability, flexibility and lower operational complexity.”

At the same time, HM Systems also experienced significant interest in cross web labelling solutions, particularly among companies working with flexible packaging and high-speed production lines.

Food industry continues to lead development

The food industry represented the largest visitor segment at the HM Systems stand, followed by packaging manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies.

Many discussions were centered around:

  • improving production efficiency
  • handling multiple product variations more effectively
  • reducing downtime
  • improving traceability
  • and preparing production lines for future market and regulatory requirements.

Several visitors also highlighted the growing need for scalable automation solutions that can adapt to changing packaging formats without increasing operational complexity.

International reach and high-quality dialogue

Interpack once again demonstrated its global importance, with visitors from Germany, the Nordic countries, India, Switzerland and several other European markets.

For the HM Systems sales team, the exhibition was not simply about generating leads, it was about building relationships and understanding the real challenges customers are facing in production today.

Henrik Thomsen, Director Business Development, Key Accounts, noted that many visitors arrived with highly concrete projects and clear expectations:

“The quality of the conversations was exceptionally high this year. Many visitors already had specific production challenges or future projects in mind, which created much deeper and more valuable discussions from the very beginning.”
